Another centerpiece of the collection, this painting recalls the moment when the hunter Actaeon sees Artemis bathing naked, as described in Ovid's Metamorphoses. He is amazed by her beauty and, upon being seen by the goddess, is punished by being transformed into a stag. (To then be chased and killed by his own 50 hunting dogs).
